AUB goes green, with ECOsys solar solution
ECOsys, part of ITG (Holding), signed a deal to develop a photovoltaic project at the American University of Beirut (AUB).
The project is funded by the “European Union Cross-Border Cooperation in the Mediterranean” (ENPI-CBCMED), MED-SOLAR project, in partnership with MONEERA, a non-profit social enterprise focused on alleviating the electric power shortage problem in Lebanon (and beyond). MONEERA aim is to assist the government in providing practical, sustainable, reliable and affordable solutions to the power shortages in Lebanon.
ECOsys is a provider of world-class renewable energy & power solutions, for corporate, government institutions and homes.
This is the first solar system to be installed at the AUB, aiming to ensure reliable & cost saving electricity with a low maintenance system: A photovoltaic hybrid power plant consisting of PV generator, PV plant controller and data logger, inverters & auxiliary equipment, from leading brands such as Trina Solar & Schletter.
The total capacity of the photovoltaic system at AUB is 150 Kilowatt peak, consisting of 474 PV panels that cover the rooftops of the Bechtel Engineering Building (BEB) and the Scientific Research Building (SRB). The panels will be installed by June 2016 over an estimated area of 1,450 SQM.
The system is expected to produce 209 megawatt-hours of energy yearly with a saving of $40,000.
“It is a pilot project that will prove the importance of a photovoltaic system as a solution for the electricity sector and it would be a good example to drive the whole university towards going green,” said George Geha, Chairman of ECOsys.
Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut bases its educational philosophy, standards, and practices on the American liberal arts model of higher education.
